December 2019 edition: Winter Wildlife

We’ll prove that winter’s great for wildlife, even if everywhere’s frozen over. Red squirrels look for food. Birds are easier to see, and some travel in great flocks. Owls get active. It’s the best time to see red foxes. You can ‘read’ and follow animal tracks. And there’s also still lots of lush greenery about. Honestly! It’s all around you if you know where to look. 

Of course, many creatures do hibernate over winter or become completely inactive. From bats and bears to toads and bees, let’s see how they prepare for those long months.

We'll investigate some truly weird winter wildlife. Snow-digging otters! Frogs that freeze solid (and don’t mind)! Birds that hide under stones for winter (it’s easier than migrating). Butterflies that sleep under the snow – and more!
